You’ve been invited to be a guest on the Beyond Consultation Podcast…
You’ve probably got a few questions, so this page is here to help you decide if this is right for you.
What is the Beyond Consultation Podcast about?
The Beyond Consultation Podcast is for public sector professionals who want to go beyond the bare minimum of consultation. You'll hear stories of people working together on challenges that no organization can address on its own. We want to share the stories of people who are making a bigger collective impact by working better with other communities, industries and organisations.
We’re interviewing people from around Aotearoa New Zealand to uncover success stories and lessons learned. We have a hunch that many people in the public sector want to from ways of “delivering to” to “working with”, but they’re struggling with how to make that shift.
Why should I be a guest?
You’ll have the chance to share your message with our listeners who mainly work in the community and public sectors. Podcasting is an accessible way to share what you’ve learned so others can benefit from your experience.
For you personally… It’s a great way to get your name out there, and to shine a light on a new approach, project or idea that you’re proud of.
For your organisation… It’s an easy way to promote your work to other funders and organisations who might want to partner with or refer to you.
Do I get paid to be a guest?
No, we don’t currently offer payment.
We view podcasting as a reciprocal relationship - one that enhances us both.
You provide your stories and expertise and we get to learn from your wisdom and share this with our listeners. Our mission is to help people who are doing important work with communities.
In return, you get a nicely edited audio that showcases your expertise. (Plus we send all our guests a book of their choice from previous guests!)
We do all the work to publish the podcast. Each episode takes about 8 hours of our team’s time to invite guests, prepare for interviews, record the show, edit the audio, publish online, write shownotes, collate resources and more.
Who owns the audio?
By agreeing to be a guest on the show, you agree to Business Lab owning the audio that is created together.
Having said that, we will gladly:
(a) provide the audio to you should you wish to use it for your own purposes
(b) remove or alter aspects of the audio based on your feedback
(c) agree on a different ownership arrangement if this is important to you. We know that data sovereignty is important, especially for our indigenous whānau.
Can I listen to the episode before it’s published?
Our general rule is to publish the audio without providing guests a chance to review it. This is simply for reasons of time. Adding in an additional review step makes it harder to publish an episode every two weeks!
If you need to review the audio to feel comfortable being a guest, we can make this happen.
How long will the episode be?
We aim for episodes between 15 to 30 minutes long. That’s enough time to go deep into some of your experience, but not so long that people nod off halfway through. We may well talk for longer on our call with you, and then shorten that down to the ‘best bits’.
I’m nervous about being a guest…
This is normal.
Here are a few things we can say to set you at ease:
Podcasting is not live radio so you don’t need to worry about um’s and ah’s, or imperfect answers. We’ll edit things afterwards.
We want you to sound good. We’re not going to ask you questions aimed at tripping you up. If one of your answers doesn’t hit the mark, we’ll remove it and nobody will be any the wiser.

What can I expect before, during and after the recording session?
Before the recording session
Once you lock in a time for your session, we ask that you get your tech sorted for the recording session:
Get some headphones. These are a MUST-HAVE so we don’t have horrible feedback in our recordings.
If possible, source yourself a microphone. You need one that plugs into your computer via USB or the audio jack. If you can’t get hold of one, don’t worry - your laptop mic will be okay.
Organise to be somewhere quiet with good internet on the day. This will help ensure you sound great on the podcast.
We also recommend brainstorming some stories or topics you would like to share. Remember, podcasting is not live radio. It’s a casual conversation and we can edit out your um’s and ah’s. It’s also not a speech so please don’t prepare a written monologue either; we will simply interrupt you if that happens.
To enter the recording session
On the day of your session, we ask that you:
Start getting ready 10 minutes before your scheduled session
Find somewhere quiet and put your phone on vibrate
Plug in and power on your microphone and headphones
Join the Zoom call and settle in for a good conversation.
After the recording session
After your session, we’ll work as quickly as we can to edit and publish your session. Expect this to take between 1 to 4 weeks. We will then publish it to www.businesslab.co.nz/podcast, share it on LinkedIn and with our mailing list, and email you to let you know.
As a general rule, we won’t offer you the chance to share feedback on the edited session before it’s published. This can suck up a lot of time while adding little benefit to our audience. But if you would like to hear the episode before it’s published, please let us know.
You also need to know that we reserve the right to not publish your session if we think it won’t add value to our audience. We’ll do everything on the day to make sure that doesn’t happen. But sometimes the audio turns out poorly or things just aren’t quite on the money.
